Mites in horses, start treating ASAP!

Stamping in winter. A well-known phenomenon in horses, especially those with a lot of hair on their legs. Mainly when it is damp, sultry weather and horses are in the mud a bit more often, it is often a recurring problem. Mites! How to treat it and especially how to get rid of it ASAP?

Mites occur in all types of horses

Clients regularly think that their horse cannot have mites because it is a warmblood and has no feathers. This is perhaps the biggest misconception about mites. All horses can suffer from mites, but some horses are more susceptible to them than others. It may be the case that a horse carries mites but has no complaints from them. However, horses with feathers are more susceptible to mites, as are horses with CPL. This is because it is warmer between the hairs and therefore an ideal place for mites to settle.

Mites are difficult to control

Unfortunately, mites are very persistent and therefore difficult to control in horses. You cannot see them with the naked eye, which makes it even more complicated. The only way to find out if your horse actually has mites is to have a scraping taken by the vet and check it under the microscope. But often the symptoms say enough and it can be assumed with great certainty that a horse has mites. The main symptoms are: stamping the legs, biting the feathers and mud fever spots that just won't heal. To tackle mites, you need to be consistent in your treatment and have a long breath. Of course, you can opt for chemical treatment, but bear in mind that this has a lot of negative effects on the horse's overall resistance and will actually cause more health problems in the long run. And even with chemical treatment, you have to repeat the treatment regularly and there is a very high chance that the mite problem will still return. Our preference is therefore really for the natural approach.

Start treating as soon as possible!

Mites are not only persistent, they also spread easily. It is therefore necessary to treat your horse as soon as possible. The sooner you start, the sooner you will have the problem under control. This is because mites lay many eggs and these eggs hatch when conditions are ideal. This may be within two weeks, but it can also take up to two years. This is also what makes mites so stubborn, because you may feel that the problem has been solved, but a few years later the problem suddenly reappears. And there is nothing that can kill the eggs, nothing at all (except fire). No chemical or natural product works against eggs. You therefore want to prevent a lot of eggs, which is why you should start treating against mites as soon as possible after detection.

Boost resistance and treat against mites via supplement!

Mites can get hold of horses when they have a dip in their resistance. Horses are then more susceptible and we see that at those moments the mites take hold and reproduce en masse. It is therefore important to boost your horse's resistance. For this, choose a nettle tincture, as this really boosts the resistance and is blood-purifying. There is also an herbal supplement that makes the horse's blood and dander indigestible to mites. This stops mites from reproducing and breaks the cycle. As fewer eggs are produced, the problem will become smaller and smaller and remain manageable. Do give this product consistently, every day, over the feed for a longer period. That way, you also continue to catch newly hatched eggs so those mites can no longer reproduce. If necessary, you can also treat externally with a care product based on castor oil. This has a caring, soothing and supportive effect on the skin. The composition of this product for soaking legs also has a repellent effect on mites.
